WATER SOLUBILITY

Most Bio T series products are soluble in water. Bio T Max changes from a clear, light yellow liquid to a white emulsion in the presence of water. Bio T General Purpose Cleaner is supplied as a white emulsion since it contains water. These emulsions are stable for several days, after which they separate with the water going to the bottom. Mild agitation will restore the product to a homogenous emulsion.

Bio T Max, when mixed with water, goes through a viscosity rise, to gel formation, then a decrease as the water content is increased. This physical phenomenon is the same whether the water is added to Bio T Max or Bio T Max is added to water. The phenomenon does not occur with Bio T General Purpose Cleaner.

GOVERMENTAL DEPARTMENT EVALUATIONS

EPA
Air Emissions
Bio T products can be used in such a way as to meet local emissions standards.

Effluent Water
Effluent water containing less than 1.5% Bio T Max is considered a nonhazardous waste based on its constituents and its nonflammibility. The chemical constituents of Bio T products are not contained in the EPA's priority list nor on the total toxic organic (TTO) list addressed under the categorical pretreatment standards. Bio T products can be used in such a way as to meet South Coast Air Quality District (SCAQD) requirements, some of the most stringent regulations.

RCRA
According to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), 40 CFR 261.22, waste discharged is considered hazardous if it has a flash point (by a Pensky-Martens or Setaflash closed cup tester) below 140F. If Bio T Max concentration in the wastewater, generated by rinsing Bio T Max with water, is less than 1.5%, its flash point will be greater than 200F and therefore can be discharged as a non-hazardous waste.

TSCA
Bio T series products are made from constituents that are on the Toxic Substances Control Act inventory of nontoxic substances as documented in the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances, U.S. Public Health Services.

OSHA
1. Carcinogenicity: Bio T products are not considered a human carcinogen on the basis of test data collected by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and OSHA.

2. Corrosivity:Bio T products are not considered corrosive(s) based on prescribed exposure tests conducted in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) criteria.

3. Toxicity:Bio T products have been evaluated for toxicity and high toxicity as defined in 29 CFR 1910.1200 (OSHA Right to Know). The results of the evaluation indicate that Bio T products are clearly not a toxic nor highly toxic material. This is based on the following tests:

A. Ingestion value for Bio T Max -- LD50 => 5000 mg/kg . OSHA assigns the following definition to ingestion LD50: LD50 <50 mg/kg="highly" toxic; LD50 between 50-500 mg/kg="toxic;" LD50 of> 500 mg/kg = nontoxic. Bio T Max at LD50 > 5000 is therefore classified as nontoxic.

B. Inhalation value for Bio T Max - NO DETECTABLE EFFECTS OBSERVED AT 6.27 MG/L.

OSHA assigns the following definition to inhalation LC50 data: LC50 of <2 MG/L="highly" toxic; LC50 of 2-20 MG/L="toxic;" LC50 of> 20 MG/L = nontoxic. Bio T Max inhalation tests ran at 6.27 MG/L; had no detectable effects. Therefore, the inhalation of Bio T Max is considered by our toxicology group to be classified as nontoxic.

C. Skin contact test data: EPA proposed guidelines to define Draize numbers for skin sensitization are as follows: <2 irritation; 2-5="moderate;">5 = severe irritant.

Bio T Max has a Draize value of 1.0 and is defined as a slight irritant.

4. Irritants: Bio T products are not considered an irritant on the basis of OSHA criteria.

5. Sensitizers: Bio T products are not a sensitizer as defined by OSHA.

6. Target Organ Effects: Bio T products do not exhibit any known target organ effects as defined by OSHA criteria.

FDA
Our products are not intended to be consumed by the body. However, the primary component of Bio T products is approved by the FDA as a food additive and is included in the "Generally Recognized as Safe" or GRAS list under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1958.

USDA
Bio T Max and Bio T General Purpose Cleaner are designated by the USDA as Class C Substances.

SARA
Bio T products contain no components that require reporting under SARA Title III.

FLASH POINT & TABLE

Flash point is the temperature at which vapors given off can be ignited with an external flame.

Different government agencies treat flash point differently, depending on the purpose of the definition. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has a definition relative to the transport of flammable materials within and between states. OSHA has a definition to protect plant workers. EPA's RCRA (Resource Conservation & Recovery Act) has a definition related to control of hazardous waste.

STORAGE AND HANDLING

Bio T Max is a stable, relatively high flash point material which is safe to store and handle.

Bio T General Purpose Cleaner is a relatively unstable emulsion which can be re-emulsified with only moderate agitation of the liquid. It has a relatively high flash point and will freeze.

All the Bio T series products de-fat the skin and can irritate the eyes. When handling Bio T products, nitrile type gloves and eye protection should be used.

Storage containers should be lined steel, fluorinated plastic, glass, or stainless steel. Storage temperature should not exceed 50C (122F). Storage temperature of Bio T General Purpose Cleaner and Bio T General Purpose Foam should not go below 32F.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE

Bio T Max
Avoid contact with eyes. Wash thoroughly after handling. For spills, flush with water and dispose. Observe government regulations. FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY.

Bio T General Purpose Cleaner
Avoid contact with eyes. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not freeze. For spills--flush with water and dispose. Observe government regulations. FOR INDUSTRIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL USE.

Bio T General Purpose Foam
Avoid contact with eyes. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not freeze. Do not puncture aerosol container. Observe government regulations. FOR INDUSTRIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL USE.

Residue resulting from cleaning a hazardous substance with Bio T cleaners may be considered a hazardous waste. Please dispose of hazardous waste in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws. Unused Bio T products have a flash point of 130F and also must be disposed of in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws.

HEALTH EFFECTS

The Bio T series of products produce no significant ingestion nor inhalation hazards. They are a slight-to-moderate eye irritant.

Prolonged use of the products should be done with adequate ventilation and adequate skin protection. As a cleaning/degreasing material, these products will de-fat the skin.

When considering the use of any product in a particular application, please review our latest Material Safety Data Sheet for that product and ensure that the use you intend can be accomplished safely.

Material Safety Data Sheets are updated whenever new information becomes available. The latest sheet can be obtained by contacting your BioChem sales representative or distributor.
