When performing scheduled maintenance on OCRs, Solomon must untank the carbonized oil that fills
the reclosures and remove oil, carbon and other contaminants from internal electrical components
to restore their efficiency. "These components are literally covered with carbonized oil, which
causes them to lose dielectric strength," says David Gerhardt, Solomon purchasing agent. "We apply
SolSafe 245 using a high pressure spraying process to remove the carbon and other contaminants."
SolSafe has also proven to be cost-effective for Solomon. "Because SolSafe 245 is not as volatile
as xylene-based aromatic cleaners, we are able to capture the solvent after spraying and reuse it.
This ultimately reduces the number of dollars we spend on cleaners."
AQMD, in an effort to reduce VOC emissions from industrial cleaners by 46 percent, or 20.5 tons
per day, by the year 2010, recently adopted Rule 1122. This ruling, which takes effect January 1,
1999, will virtually eliminate petroleum-based solvents and cleaning products and replace them
with water-based cleaners. Rule 1122 will lower the VOC content of general cleaning solvents from
today's limit of 900 grams per liter to 50 grams per liter.
The AQMD is the air pollution control agency for a four-country region, including Los Angeles
and Orange counties and parts of Riverside and San Bernadino counties. This area is home to
approximately half of the population of California.
Through a comprehensive program of planning, regulation, compliance assistance, enforcement,
monitoring, technology advancement and public education, AQMD strives to achieve and maintain
healthful air quality for its residents. The agency continuously monitors air quality at more
than 30 locations throughout the four-county area, and is responsible for controlling emissions
from station sources of air pollution. These can include anything from large powerplants and
refineries to the corner gas station. There are about 31,000 such businesses operating under
AQMD permits.
The AQMD operates a Clean air Solutions Center featuring informal displays and demonstrations of
how Clean Air Solvents are used. The center is located in the AQMD headquarters building at
21865 E. Copley Drive, Diamondbar, CA. It is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday. Admission and parking are free.

![]() Graffiti Buster II is completely biodegradable and safe to use. It has been used in neighborhood clean-up projects across the U.S. and internationally. |
You may be thinking it would take more than a supply of Graffiti Buster to restore Capitol Hill.
Well, not the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver, CO. On a beautiful Saturday in
September, an army of volunteers, numbering more than 75 and ranging in age from 12 to 80 years,
rallied to wipe clean 84 square blocks of graffiti. And BioChem's Graffiti Buster II industrial
strength graffiti remover, led the charge!
"We used BioChem's Graffiti Buster several years ago and found it to be a remarkable product for
removing graffiti from flat, painted surface," says Tom Knorr, executive director of the Capitol
Hill United Neighborhoods. "BioChem's Graffiti Buster was a significant factor in our success. We
wiped out months of 'tag' graffiti that had been spray-painted on garages, dumpsters, traffic
signal boxes, electrical junction boxes and newspaper vending machines in a matter of hours."
"Although much of the graffiti was eliminated, a core group of dedicated residents continues to
fight the battle. We arm each one with a graffiti clean-up kit, which includes a supply of
BioChem's Graffiti Buster."
